"Girl" Comics

Over this past weekend, I took a Theory of Comic Book's course and found it to be very interesting. We went over Frank Miller's stuff and mainly focused on Batman. The only real pleasure I found from the course was going through old "girlie" comic book covers. I was brought back to my childhood favorites like Betty & Veronica. I've always loved Veronica the most. I think it's probably because she was manipulative, prettier, and rich. She is the epitome of a diva, and I was drawn to that lifestyle. Betty seemed to like church, rainbows, knitting, and baking cookies--not cool. She was a square bear in comparison to Veronica.

My favorite outfit! I wish I could find this ensemble:

And who can forget the Barbie Comics? She and her friends were pretty fly too in the 80's.

My final project will involve Betty & Veronica. I'll be talking about how the patriarchal capatilist system reinforces gender roles through consumerism, and competition amongst women. Or something like that. I'm not sure yet, but I have a vague idea. Although I'll be ripping this comic book to shreds, I still heart Veronica and her fresh steez!
