Race Horse Name Culture

A childhood memory of mine is going to the horse races with my dad in Grants Pass, OR. It was always a fun day of bad for you race track food, placing bets, spending time with the family, and looking at all the names of the horses. I also remember that I would collect the tickets with the bets placed on them and I'd take them home and play with them, what a great toy for a kid right? I had a great imagination, I've had the amazing qualities of a thespian since day one!

Well I was reminded of this because last weekend I was watching some horse races with my dad while visiting my parents. I realized as the announcer was going off doing the play by play how ridiculous he sounded because these horses have the most ridiculous names. Are these horse owners so bored and rich that they see what names they can get away with? Well here is a great list of names that I heard in about 5 minutes of watching:

She Had Me At Hello
Hot 'n' Dusty
Malibu Moon
Fool Me Once

What happened to regular names like Billy or Pablo?
The names they choose are so epic, which means these horses better live up to their dramatic names.
