Ricki Lake- Get a Grip Doll! You're too fat to be a Drag Queen!

I have found you all another 90's talk show treasure! In this episode of Ricki Lake, people bring their drag queen friends and family members to tell them they are too fat. As the show progresses, people get snappy and diva-licious....and I love it! Ricki makes a great mediator too. There's nothing like creating a public discourse about weightism and gender mixed with some sass.

My favorite quote: "Honey, I will give you a mirror to show you disappointment "

I promise you'll be entertained.

I Want...

All of these items listed below are on my Wish List. When I'm broke, I blame capitalism for everything bad. Money is the root of all evil, but it's also the key to my happiness. I can't help that I heart shiny things! The bare minimum is not good enough! I need pizazz and I bore easily. My closet needs rejuvenation every once in a while...

These jewelry pieces reflect how much I love black and gold together. ♥ Plus, that ring looks like that Valentino bag that was posted by $cruz a while back.

Out of all the accessories in the world, I detest watches. I think it's because they serve as reminders of my non-punctual habits. Time is the worst social construct ever thought of. However, I would wear this a la Flavor Flav.

Lately, I've been all about geometric shapes and color blocks. There's something so clean and elegant about these prints.
So 80's prom dress! I love it!

Michael Jackson Died...

$cruz and I were pretty upset when we heard the news yesterday. Stefanie's sister called her to ask if the news about MJ was true and that's how we found out. We were looking for the New York City Sub Shop that $cruz claimed was on Alder in downtown Portland. All lies. If that were true, I would have frequented it everyday since it was my favorite sub shop in Hood River. But it's cool, I like wild goose chases and let's face it, we were extremely bored. After the news of MJ's death, we didn't feel so good anymore. It ruined my day.

So what do two depressed brown girls do? Get their nails did. We did it in his honor, really. We wanted to look flashy and live beyond our means, that's what Michael would have done. $400 million dollar debt? Ain't no thang. After a long wait at the salon, we came out with this:

We got some pretty designs and summery colors. Stefanie took it back to the late 90's with that iced baby blue and I'd been itching for some lavendar nails. Should I have done this? Probably not. Did it make me feel good? Yes. RIP MJ

We ♥ Games!

Both of these games were staples at sleepovers I would go to. They were both so deliciously ridiculous. Girl Talk was the "girly" version of truth or dare. Most of the "dares" included divulging your secret crush or actually dialing his digits only to hang up when his mom answered. I was that girl who was always chicken.

Now, Dream Phone was my shit. You had to guess who your secret caller was by picking up the phone and hearing clues. It always ended with some guy named, "Chad", "Brad", or "Michael" These fools were always "waiting" for me at the beach, mall, or some place equally cheesy and unimaginative. I just wanted to pick up the phone and hear Bob Morales from La Bamba tell me something like, "It's not like we're married", or something just as aloof and cold. Or maybe Cruz from Blood in Blood Out telling me he's going to paint (or airbrush) me as an Aztec Princess, but then he forgets my birthday and my name. That would be more realistic.

To be young again...

The covers above really represent my life around 3rd-4th grade. I bought, or my mom bought for me, a bunch of these types of magazines. All those "hunks" on the cover were so bomb.com in their day. It's so funny to look at them now. It's like a mountain collage of photos, it's like "Hey! this is a boy buffet! Come get all the scoop plus a fold out poster of Jonathan Taylor Thomas with a puppy!"
Where are all these guys now? I'm talking about my top fellas: JTT, Devon Sawa, and Andrew Keegan. Ah man, the JoBros and Zac Efron are the new teen meat. I love how the cycle continues. I'm a vieja now, I read TIME Magazine.

*Wink* He loves you sweetie.

Portland: The New Hollywood!

Portland OR has been getting some "action." Over the last few months the movie Crowley has filmed here (with Harrison Ford and Keri Russell). Screw H. Ford, Keri Russell!?!? She is the reason I wanted to go to college. Felicity por vida! A friend of mine saw her out and about, and apparently she frequents the Starbucks I'm sitting in right now. If I saw her, would I sob from excitement? Probably.

Also, the show Leverage films here. An actual show films here. Why? It stars Timothy Hutton, I guess he's a big deal. Anyway, they film around downtown a bunch. The other day, it was around 1:00ish am, and Marb$ and I saw all the trailers and crew peeps so we took it upon ourselves to park and go and walk near the filming area. We saw T. Hutt (as I like to call him) film a scene a bunch of times.

I've never even seen this show, but I might tune in just to see the Portland-ness. Marb$ was tempted to walk in front of the camera in order to make the blooper reel. But for serious, we want to linger around the filming of the show in order to get discovered. We have hope TNT wants us on that show. We know drama...well Marb$ does.

"Your brotha is smaaart"

BET is nice enough to play great sitcoms from the past and present, one being Smart Guy. I didn't realize how much I really enjoyed this show. I used to watch it back in the day when it was on the The WB. How good was the chemistry between Marcus and Mo? Too good.

As I mentioned previously, shows and their intros aren't what they used to be. I loved when this show started because I could sing/rap the intro, yup it's true I have no shame in admitting that. This show came at the prime of Tahj Mowry's "cuteness." He began his cuteness as Teddy on Full House, how adorable. But he has child actor syndrome, meaning he is nowhere to be found in the acting world. No one wants to see Smart Guy all old.

Enjoy the intro...it's one of my favs.

New American Hero: Kenny Powers!

The show: Eastbound & Down (HBO)
The man: Kenny Powers
We were introduced to this show a few weeks back by our friend Ariel. Maribel and I were so appalled that we had never heard of this show. We watched a great batch of youtube clips and we were sold! This show is so amazing and offensive, it's perfect. It has the most random and disgusting humor, it works so well.

The show is about a former pro-baseball player who returns to his home town because he has nothing. The show is all sorts of fun. Also, the show is produced by Will Ferrell who appears in a couple of episodes.
Kenny Powers is played by Danny McBride, you might remember him as the guy who wouldn't die in Pineapple Express.

As soon as this show comes out on DVD I need to own it, it has quotes left and right.

Watch the youtube below and enjoy.

DEXTER: Season 4

Look at this Promo Art for
Dexter Season 4

Why do I love it so much?! AH, I need Showtime!

Jon & Kate DRAMZ

I've moved into a home that has cable and I've been really utilizing that. I have watched way too many episodes of Jon & Kate Plus 8. I just couldn't stop, I felt like everyone else in the country so interested in their hot mess of a relationship. But as I continued to watch I just got so sad. The nation has turned their relationship into a soap opera and they are on the cover of all tabloids everyday. Their news of a divorce was not a surprise, but as you see all these children on TV it's just incredibly sad. These kids have footage of their parents falling apart. I don't know why this affected me so much, but I hope for the sake of their lives it all goes away, as well as Kate Gosselin's haircut.

La Bamba: Bob Morales

La Bamba is one of my all time favorite movies, as well as one of the top films I like to quote. I watched this movie at a young age, too young really. The movie has heart, unintentional comedy, music, and just a all around love and heartbreak.

But the real gem of this film? Esai Morales as Bob Morales. Bob is the "messed-up" bro of Ritchie Valens. Esai Morales plays this part too well, he's all macho and a tortured artist. He really encompasses this idea of what a brown man is. Maribel and I have many discussions about brown men and Bob seems to fit the mold perfectly: He might ruin your life, get you pregnant, be an ass in public, have a drinking problem, etc. But why do we continue to love BOB? Is it because Ritchie is a full on square bear? Ay dios, I don't know.

This short clip really embodies Bob:

Chris Pine Looking all Sorts of Fine.

I saw these pictures of Chris Pine (the guy from Star Trek) on Just Jared and I had to share. I like the way he dresses and puts himself together. Man Cardigan + Sneakers = ♥

You go, Chris Pine!

An Open Letter to Pitbull

Dear, Mr. 305 aka Pitbull

We write this letter to inform you that we heart your music, your debonair qualities, and just plain you. Those beats and lyrics are infectious and when we hear your music, we stand up and dance. It appears that you are on EVERY remix for every song possible. It's a general rule that if Pitbull is on (even if he is just featured), you stop what you're doing and hit the floor. As Stefanie once remarked, "When the DJ puts on Daddy Yankee and Pitbull back-to-back like that, I know that God exists." At an obscure club in Eugene, they played five of your songs back-to-back and we can swear that we felt the holy spirit run through us that night.

Once again, loving you and your music causes conflict. As we previously stated with the open letter to Daddy Yankee, we consider ourselves to be forward-thinking types. We don't dig the reinforcing of patriarchal views and the subordination of women. Being oppressed is not bomb. I even wrote a content analysis of your video for Ay Chico and concluded that you were bad for the Raza overall. Even while I was writing a huge paper on Feminist Standpoint Theory, Stefanie was searching for all of your music and listening to it online. And when I mean "all", I mean ALL that you have ever recorded. She became your official historian that night.

Now we know you do good and you care about your people. You even went as far as naming your album El Mariel in reference to the mass exodus of Cubans. During an interview, we heard that you give away your shoes to people in Cuba and only wear one pair of Prada loafers. A booty-hit maker and a
philanthropist--you do it all! And speaking of Prada, we have a suggestion for you, don't wear the cologne. During the same interview, we heard that your cologne of choice is Prada, we highly recommend Armani. Prada smelled like babies and old ladies combined, and it's surprising to us that it is marketed to men. So think about that.

Until next time,

Las Chicas del 503 aka Marb$ and $cruz.

What Were You Thinking, Kelis?

You were one of my idols Kelis-- what the hell is this that you are wearing? I know you're all preggers and Nas left you, but get yourself together. It looks you made a purse out of Grover (featured below). Que paso?!

BRING OLD KELIS BACK!!!!

Let me take you back with Busta Rhymes and Kelis... Those outfits and the hairstyle are correct! I used to braid my hair into buns so I could look like Kelis in this video. I never got the cornrows though, or as my mom would say, "Que? Yo no se como hacer cornfields."

Me Likes.

I like the Miami Vice feel of this blazer. I'm trying to find alternatives in "working-girl" clothing. There is no way in hell I'll be forced to wear pointy-toe heels or wide-leg trousers. That's my worst nightmare.

Hipsters heart Native American steez.

While people watching under a tree one day on campus, I noticed an interesting trend: Hipsters+Native American gear = New Ironic Style.

I wondered what would happen to hipsters now that the mainstream has appropriated their style. But now my question was answered. Want to be on the edge? Just obtain these items and your set. I can't wait until hipsters start rocking the ponchos with the huaraches.
Anything in this print is pretty hipsterish:

The Today Show on "Hispanic" Pop Culture

The Today Show tried to discuss "Hispanics" in Pop Culture. Oh god, watch this and try not to be offended. First, Hispanic? Really? I'll spare you my rant on why this word is not okay. Second, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz? They're European! How can they put Javier Bardem in the same category as my people?! I'm embarrassed! That stupid wanna-be Dora the Explorer haircut he had in No Country For Old Men was gross.

I'm not quite sure what the Today show was trying to get at with this piece. It just showed the marketability of Brown people. Also, I love how they try to shove us all under the Hispanic umbrella. There is a difference in cultures and countries and it is unfortunately not honored in this clip. We were reduced to a flavor of the week (dulce de leche to be exact).

I think my mouth dropped a little when the old guy said, "you really never know who's hispanic and who isn't these days." (around 4:18 minutes into the clip) What does it matter, really? Why should we identify ourselves? Sorry, did we sneak under your radar and the U.S.-Mexico fence too quietly? My apologies, we'll make sure the conga line and maracas are much louder next time.

Updates and Stuff!

Some updates:

1)It was our blog's first birthday on June 15th! Both Stefanie and I are commitment-phobics, but we really dedicated ourselves to this project. We hope to have bigger things in store for the blog in the future now that we have some time on our hands.

2) We graduated from Portland State (in case you were wondering). Stefanie got a B.A. in Sociology and I recieved my B.A. in both Communication Studies and Arts & Letters. Both of us are still trying to figure out our Chicano/Latino certificate situation since they changed the requirements, but I think for the most part we have it.

3) Our other project besides this blog includes the Save Chicano/Latino Studies Campaign at PSU. We've been extremely busy with it since we tried to make things happen before we graduated. It's been meeting after meeting with administration and faculty--we've been busy, but we're really proud of the work we've done!

4) Finals sucked our souls out of our bodies. We were in the computer lab last week from Sunday-Friday everyday from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. (yup, all night until morning). After day 3, I lost track of the days. I also vomited from caffeine overload while walking home one morning. It could have all been avoided if we had not been so involved, but it's worth seeing the 4.0 at the end of the term (don't hate).

Did you miss us?

Mix-Great con La Marble$

This is my last Mix-Great Monday as an undergrad. Time flies!
I know it's been a long time since I've posted, but I'm here! Unfortunately, imeem has decided to only post 30 second clips in each embedded song. It totally defeats the purpose of embedding shit into blogs and comment boxes, but whatever, we are resourceful. We just turned to Youtube instead.

1. SONG THAT SPEAKS TO MY SOUL: "HEARTBEATS"- THE KNIFE

This song was my jam a long time ago. It takes me back to the days when I would try to hunt for the perfect skinny-jeans and flats. I'd play this on repeat constantly because it was upbeat. Deep Cuts and Silent Shout were my shit back when I was younger. That's when I was in full blown Electro mode circa 2005-2008. There's an acoustic version of this song by José Gonzalez that everyone goes crazy for. Listen To it Here

2. THE THROWBACK: "MUJER LATINA"- THALIA
This song reminds me of my 8th grade summer and swim practice. In between swimming practices, I also had to memorize dance moves to this song for a quinceañera. Around this time, I had to channel my inner "fierce bitch" and learn to move my hips in ways I didn't know where possible. My mom had to take time out of her day to watch me practice and help me out because I was super embarrassed. She'd make me feel really shy and shout things like, "work it, girl!" I had to perform this number, The Cup of Life by Ricky Martin, and Salomé by Chayanne (yes, it can be found on the red album that Stefanie posted)

3.
THE GUILTY PLEASURE: "GIRLS ON THE DANCE FLOOR"- FAR EAST MOVEMENT

This song is BOMB. You know I'd bust out the best dance moves in my repertoire just for this beat alone. I'm sure you're all happy I introduced it into your lives. It came up on my Pitbull Pandora Radio station (y que?)

4. SONG THAT IS LIKE ROSES AND CHOCOLATE: "BIRTHDAY SEX"- Jeremih Feat. Pitbull (uptempo remix)
The original song is way more Roses and Chocolate, but that version doesn't have Pitbull. We here at IHST love Pitbull's work and we are big advocates of his music. The theme of this song is pretty straight forward. The first time we heard it, we thought it was the most ridiculous thing we had ever heard, but soon changed our minds and our hearts.

MixGreat: $cruz is graduating college edition

I have 2/10 pages done on my final undergrad paper, and I choose to ignore it right now.  Lets get some tunes going.  I'm only going to give the titles and artists because I can't find energy to find witty words to describe why I chose my choices.

1. Song That Speaks To My Soul
"Help, I'm Alive"-Metric

This song has popped back into my life yesterday and today, at very crucial points in my day.  It's exactly what I need right now.

2. The Throwback
"Hey Mr. DJ"-Zhane

3. The Guilty Pleasure
"Best I Ever Had"-Drake

OMG it's Jimmy from Degrassi.  What the hell?  I was very much surprised to find that information out.  Whatevs, it's a good song.

4. Song That Is Like Chocolate & Roses
"Slow Down"-Bobby Valentino

Archie + Veronica = <3

I'm currently doing research for my comic book course right now and found some shocking news: Archie is going to ask Veronica Lodge to marry him. This is a huge deal.
"It's the milestone 600th issue and we're serving up the Archie story of the century as Archie marries Veronica!!!" the publisher says on its Web site.

"The 32-page issue takes a look at Archie and his friends after they graduate college! What careers will they seek? Will the friends stay in Riverdale or disperse? What would lead Archie to have marriage on his mind? And who would he choose Veronica or Betty? How will Betty react? How will Veronica react? Can Archie shake off his klutzy past and hold down a steady job... for more than a month? One thing is certain: this will be the biggest Archie Comics story ever! (Read More Here)

They are graduating just like us and they already want to get married?! Don't do it, girl. You're rich and beautiful, live a little. You've always been my favorite, Veronica. Why are you doing this to me?

Another Can't Hardly Wait Post!

I know we posted on Can't Hardly Wait Before (click here to see it)...

However, I was cleaning my apartment and getting my domestic on, I saw that Can't Hardly Wait was on MTV. I dropped whatever I was doing and sat on my bed to watch. We at IHST HEART Can't Hardly Wait. This was THE late 90's teen movie. If you think it's She's All That or American Pie, you need to check yourself. Can't Hardly Wait had people you could identify with and it was hilarious. My favorite character? Kenny Fisher, AKA Special K, dawg. He is king of the swirls (click here for a definition). You need to see Stefanie's impression, it's pretty hilarious. Watch the youtubes below and get a feel for who Kenny is then go out and rent this movie.

Listen Up: PDX Cyclists/Hipsters

Before you ride around on your fancy bikes please watch this:

Youtube Love

It is the week before finals and I'm doing a bunch of nothing because I'm awesome. As I was surfing the youtube world I started watching Selena, the great classic we all love. As I'm watching part 6 I see these comments:

I haven't laughed so hard in awhile. People are great, I love them.

Hater Jueves: Pants + Shorts = Shants

Since freakishly hot weather has settled in Portland, there has been an alarming trend that has risen: Shorts that are too long to be shorts and to short to be pants. Shorts + Pants = SHANTS. It's gross.

Some of the big advocates of such clothing are usually swirls (click here to check the proper definition of a swirl) or people who frequent the Lloyd Center Mall with Spider-Man backpacks (usually dominated by people of color). Once they put on a pair of shants, it's like they walk differently--with more "swagger" (I put swagger in quotes because they just look like one of their legs has fallen asleep and it's lagging behind). This trend needs to stop because I love swirls.

A big proponent of shants (and perhaps the inventor): Jermaine "I'm-a-troll" Dupri. He is so not bomb.

I Was In 4th Grade

Since we're on the topic of admitting old time favorites, I must drop this bomb on ya'll. As a 4th grader I loved this song sooooooooo much: Da Brat "Give It 2 You." I bought the TAPE single of this. I listened to it so much it was ridiculous. Rewinding a tape takes forever.

On side A it was the original jam heard below in the video, side B had the instrumental version with some backround vocal "Ah, hey" type of shizzz. So ya, I would flip it to side B and totally try to rap. Yes, that was me. A dorky frizzy haired 4th grader would be in her room trying to rap like Da Brat. Wow...I've been amazing since day 1.

In The Year 2000

Interesting fact:
Maribel and I had something in common in 8th grade, it's something beyond Roswell. We loved these 2 albums:

Mandy Moore-"So Real"
This album came out when Mandy Moore was like 4 years old. It was so forced and overproduced during the Pop-Princess era. It was gross but who ate it up like a tonta? This girl...and Marbs. Throwback jam from this album:

Lock Me In Your Heart - Mandy Moore

Destiny's Child-"The Writings on the Wall"
This album has so much pizazz! It's the four original members on the cover art, but their line-up changed quite a bit during this albums era.I need to find this album again. I'm listening to it now via the world wide web. It's so good! Hence the throwback jam:
So Good!!!

So Good - Destinys Child

I would sing these albums from beginning to end. I'd put them on full blast on my boom box, hells ya I did.

Yeah, I'm admitting this because it was 10 years ago, so I'm cool with it. I'm at a point in my life where I can do some reflecting and be okay with that.
