From Joel to Handsome: Part 1 "Old Man Chic"

Remember when I brought up our From Joel to Handsome project? Well, I promised that my brother would soon be our own personal paper doll and this is our first installment of the blog series. For this blog entry, I've decided to tackle "Old Man Chic." I would dub it, "Grandpa Style", but my grandpa did not wear this type of clothing usually. I heard he rocked the straw tejana (cowboy hat for the non-spanish speaking folk) until he D-I-E'd. Therefore, we were going for a more preppy stereotypical Anglo look. Ironically, our two main sources for inspiration are Andre 3000 and Fonzworth Bentley. Below are a couple of pictures used as examples:

Below are some of picks and suggestions to try and ease Joel into this look. Of course I do not expect miracles, but this is a good start for someone like him.

The green jacket on the left is in a fun color. It's not in some crazy flourescent hipster color which I appreciate. It has a preppy old school feel to it without the Goodwill smell. Next to this jacket is a nice basic blazer that could go with jeans or slacks. The button up above is in a nice neutral blue that can go with most anything you can dream up. It's a step-up from his short-sleeved button-ups!

As we have mentioned in previous posts, aviators are a must. Also, this semi-ironic old man hat will be a good touch for any old man chic outfit. IHST does NOT approve of the newsboy cap, so get this fedora shape instead. Not just any fedora-- this one above! Most fedora are for tools, but this shape in grey is structured in a way that works. Basic slacks in a dark shade are also a must-have. Make sure they are tailored to fit well. You don't want to be known as that dude with the apple-bottom that rivals J.Lo's. Trust me, we've seen this and had many hearty laughs at certain people's expense.

I'm a big fan of this blazer/cardigan hybrid on the very left. The material makes it less boxy than a blazer, but not so form-fitting like a normal cardigan. This is PERFECT. I'm also into any sort of plain leather-jacket, especially in brown. Black is cool too, but brown is much more chic. Since Joel is transitioning, he can't be seen in extreme nut-hugging jeans. I like the fit of these-- not too baggy and not too tight. It's enough to make any pair of shoes stand out.

Until the next From Joel to Handsome!
